Many observors have noticed parallels between World War I and the current conflict in Ukraine. In World War I Germany and the Central Powers were encircled by the Triple Entente and its New York sponsors on Wall Street. The U.S. was seeking to take over Great Britain’s role as world hegemon, and saw Germany and the Central Powers as an obstacle to attaining this goal. Working in alliance with the Entente powers, the U.S. emerged at the 1919 Versailles Conference as the globally dominant nation-state while promulgating a dubious doctrine of sole German war guilt for initiating hostilities. In the 21st century the Russian Federation was cast as the foe in opposition to the hegemony of the U.S. and its NATO/EU allies. In the Ukraine theater Russia has been subjected to encirclement and attack analogously to the manner in which Kaiser Wilhelm II’s Germany and its allies were encircled and attacked in 1914. But the alliance of Vladimir Putin’s Russia with China and the BRICS countries signals unipolar U.S. hegemony may soon be replaced with permanent multi-polarity, provided World War III can be averted.
